Like Mediagraph, Canto is a modern application that has been built from the ground up. It has a nice look and feel and an impressive AI interface. There are some important differences between the applications which we will outline here.

AI alone won’t solve all your problems
Canto has a very nice AI recognition tool. If you are looking for “aerial view of a modern office building,” it will produce great results. But if you are looking for a specific modern office building, you may get lots of other ones mixed in. That’s because the AI is trained on generic terms, not specific ones. This is even more true if you are looking for specific events or many other types of subject matter that AI can’t really understand. Of course Mediagraph has excellent AI tools as well. And for the ones that are most useful (face recognition, video transcription, OCR), our implementation is much more user-friendly.
Allow your users to discover what’s in the collection
In addition to generic AI search, you can also do a keyword search. But most users won’t know exactly what keywords to search on. Mediagraph is built to help users organically discover what’s in the collection. Mediagraph has a dozen delightful ways that your members can discover actual content effortlessly.
You need fast and efficient tagging tools
For the foreseeable future, it’s going to be essential to add tags and other information to files. These are things that AI simply can’t know, such as the name of this (event, product, class, staff position, etc.) or why it’s important to your organization. Mediagraph has the best (and fastest) tagging tools of any DAM application.
Configure your team according to your needs
When each DAM administrator costs extra, people start cutting corners. Those with admin roles get overworked and leave things undone. Or they share logins which is a bad practice to get into. Mediagraph gives you unlimited admins at every level for no additional charge.
Add other departments to the account
Canto has the ability to create Portals for other departments, but you can’t add additional admins just for that group. And you can’t add different permissions to the main library so that “this group can see and download original files” and “this other group can only view files”. Instead, you have to build separate portals which can not be easily kept in sync.
True Rights Management
For many organizations, it’s essential to clearly manage ownership and usage rights for the files in your account. This usually means that you need to tag the files with a creator and with a rights statement. While you can do this tagging one file-at-a-time, Canto does not let you find and fix mistakes, nor easily update files for changed contact info, nor build comprehensive Rights Packages. Mediagraph has some of the very best tools in the business for managing rights, easy discovery of creator and rights information, attachment of contracts and releases, expirations, etc.
